Estimating Software Projects

Public Price: Please contact us for pricing information.
GSA Price: N/A

Length: 2 day(s)

Estimating seems to require ESP to be done correctly! This workshop uncovers the "fundamental truths" of estimating projects and addresses the factors which dramatically cause estimates to be incorrect. We cover the foundation approaches for all of today’s state-of-the-art software estimating - from a brief discussion of the fundamental theory to more intensive exploration of the practical use of the techniques. Many of the techniques can also be used for detailed phase estimating. The workshop will provide easy tools and automated support techniques that can be used immediately to estimate more accurately. Participants will leave the class with spreadsheet templates that apply the estimating approaches covered.

Prerequisites:

This hands-on workshop focuses on information systems software projects. The intended audience includes Program and Project Managers, Systems Analysts, Project Office personnel and others who are required to develop estimates early in the development life-cycle. Key individuals from the client community who support project estimates have also found this course fascinating. Bring the key members of a project team together and produce a project estimate within the workshop! (requires pre-workshop coordination) Participants should have familiarity with PCs and spreadsheet operations.

Topics Covered Include:

Participants should be able to:

  • Describe the overall estimating process and the various techniques for creating early project estimates.
  • Ask the key questions which facilitate identification of project scope and risk.
  • Determine which estimating technique to use at various points in the project lifecycle.
  • Understand the factors which can dramatically affect the project estimates.
  • Understand the applicability and the role of software estimating packages in the overall process.
  • Understand the differences between Estimates and Bids and the role of Assumptions.
  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages in applying Metrics-based estimating techniques such as Function Points and Object Points and what is required for their effective use within an organization.
  • Immediately apply the appropriate techniques to current software projects.
